Shrewsbury Walk

Continuing our series of evening strolls around Shrewsbury. Starting at The Abbey and exploring our way up Abbey Foregate as far as St. Giles Church on Wenlock Road and crossing through to Highfields with all the highlights in between being brought to life for us. Leader: Gareth Williams.

Shrewsbury Walk

Moccas Park, Bredwardine, Herefordshire HR2 9LQ

A rare opportunity to visit this beautiful and significant landscaped parkland. Known for its magnificent veteran trees (some thought to survive from Norman Conquest days) the Park has a big story to tell of its ancient history landscaping ideals and extraordinary ecological diversity. The first Parkland landscape to be declared a National Nature Reserve (1981) and later (1986) included on English Heritage's Register of Parks and Gardens as part of the Grade II* Moccas Court Estate. Leader: Saul Herbert, Natural England, Senior Reserve Manager, South Mercia Team.

Shropshire Parks and Gardens AGM

Shropshire Parks and Gardens AGM to be followed by refreshments and a lecture at 7.30pm about Moccas Park, Herefordshire, an English deer park. Tom Wall, fellow SPGT member and former warden of numerous National Nature Reserves in Shropshire and Herefordshire. Tom was the first Warden of The Stiperstones (1986) where he was the instigator of the 'Back to Purple' project. He co-authored and edited 'Moccas: an English deer park, the history, wildlife and management of the first parkland National Nature Reserve'.

Arley - a Garden for all Seasons

Through the knowing eye of the Head Gardener we will get an insight into the plants and planting schemes as well as a 'behind the scenes' account of the maintenance and planning involved in this very significant garden, home to probably the first herbaceous border. Gordon Baillie, Head Gardener at Arley Hall and Gardens for the past seven years.

The Well Connected Gardener

The Well Connected Gardener:an account of Alicia Amherst, revealing a woman of remarkable gifts and energy. Passionate about plants and gardens and an observant botanist and practical gardener. She travelled extensively and was active in politics, particularly for the benefit of women. Coming from a privileged background Amherst was, in every sense, 'well-connected' - she used her connections well as we shall hear! Sue Minter, one time Curator of the Chelsea Physic Garden and author of 'The Well-Connected Gardener', the first biography of Alicia Amherst, distinguished Victorian and Edwardian horticulturist.
